Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

For the Mavericks, this is a question of competing needs.

It’s not that they don’t need Finney-Smith. They’ll miss his 3-and-D skillset. On the other hand, they’ve got a more dire need for shot creation.

Beasley provides it. In fact, we’ve never seen him alongside an elite playmaker like Doncic. Beasley could end up with career-best efficiency feasting in the space Doncic leaves.

Meanwhile, Finney-Smith, while a quality player, is replaceable. The benefits of this deal may not be obvious until the summer when the Mavs replace him.

If they’re able to, they’ll have added a shot creator, a new 3-and-D wing, and a couple of second-round picks for their trouble.

That sounds like an easy decision to us.
