Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
Well, we’ve basically given this one away. The Jazz do this deal because they’re opting to avoid a full-blown tank.
At the same time, this isn’t a significant all-in push, either. Finney-Smith is probably an upgrade over Beasley, but he’s not a substantial one. This may be a lateral move for Utah.
With that said, Finney-Smith is a more malleable player. He’s a strong 3-and-D wing who can play with anyone. If the Jazz decided to pursue a star via trade this summer, he’d likely fit with them more easily than Beasley.
He’s also not the type of player who’ll raise their floor considerably.

If the Jazz start to lose games, Finney-Smith isn’t the type of player who will destroy their lottery odds. He’s more of a ceiling raiser who makes larger contributions alongside elite offensive players.
Should the Mavericks really part with him?
