Of course, teams don’t value their players in a vacuum. They put a value on them according to what the market dictates. 

If a similar player to the one that you’re moving goes for a high price, you’ll factor that into your own pricing. If Team X received X amount of first-round picks for Player X, shouldn’t we receive amount Y for Player Y? 

That may be the Spurs’ logic in setting that asking price. This summer, the Minnesota Timberwolves sent the Utah Jazz four unprotected first-round picks in exchange for Rudy Gobert.

Surely, Poeltl is worth half as much as Gobert, isn’t he? Absolutely. Here’s the rub – many observers feel that the Wolves overpaid for Gobert.
