Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal 

Some will suggest that the Nets don’t need a big man. In fairness, Nic Claxton is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in 2022-23. 

At the same time, Claxton is not a traditional big. His lateral mobility allows him to guard the perimeter, but his relatively slight frame means that bigger, stronger centers can bully him on the low block. 

That could be an issue in the playoffs. Any aspiring contender looks to have as few holes in their roster as possible. That’s where Poeltl comes in. 

After all, nobody is bullying him. Poeltl is also a better drop coverage rim protector than Claxton, even if he’s not as quick on his feet.

The Nets could likely afford to play some lineups featuring them both in short bursts, given Claxton’s defensive versatility.
