Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
The Heat know they’re not acquiring a star point guard here. That’s why they’re not paying the cost they’d need to in order to do so.
Perhaps this team needs a bigger upgrade. That’s a fair position to take. At 21-20, they’ve had a fairly disappointing season.
Partly, that owes to Kyle Lowrys’ decline. He’s certainly not the player the Heat intended to acquire. At 36, he never will be again.
That’s the purpose of this deal. The Heat may not have a clearcut, starting caliber point guard following this deal. At the same time, they will have two fringe starters.

Splitting the position between Lowry and Beverley should result in better overall point guard production for the team, even if Beverley is a little one-dimensional.
