Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
It may be difficult to say whether Conley is worth a first-round pick. One thing is certain: if you’re parting with Conley, and absorbing Bertans’ deal, you’re entitled to a first-round pick.
That’s the logic for Utah’s return here. They don’t covet either of the incoming veterans in this deal, and in fact, Bertans could be burdensome for them. They’ll have to be compensated to take on his deal.
This ought to be sufficient compensation. Moreover, the Jazz shouldn’t fret over a bad contract – this team likely won’t be in a position to contend for a while.
They’re a good candidate to take on a bad deal in addition to some future assets.
