The NBA’s trade market is an economy. It can be uncomfortable to frame it in those terms. Players are not commodities – they’re human beings.
At the same time, workers are commodities in any economy. Let’s avoid that rabbit hole. Players have trade value. Sometimes, it’s hard to gauge exactly how much.
For example, take Mike Conley. This is a former All-Star who still performs at a high level. On the other hand, he’s also an aging, undersized guard.
The Jazz have been sinking in the standings after being one of the top emerging storylines for getting off to a start that exceeded expectations. While they like the mentorship that Conley provides, a trade makes a lot of sense.
The Dallas Mavericks would be an intriguing landing spot for Conley if he were to be traded. Luka Doncic could use another backcourt talent that thrives both on and off the ball and surely Conley would appreciate contending.
How much would the Dallas Mavericks give up for him?
