Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
If nothing else, the Heat certainly have a positional need for Collins.
When P.J. Tucker departed in free agency this summer, the team needed more to replace him. In 2022-23, they’ve been starting Jimmy Butler in the four in his absence.
Even in this wing-heavy league, that’s a stretch. If nothing else, this deal allows the Heat to shift Butler back to his natural 3 position.
Luckily, that’s not all it does for them. Collins isn’t a perfect Tucker replacement. He’s not nearly as impactful of a defender, and he’s a less reliable floor spacer.
