Basketball is a two-way game. The best NBA teams know this. If you can’t defend, it doesn’t matter how much you score.
At the same time, some players have such tremendous individual offensive talent that teams will live with their defensive deficiencies.
A player who is capable of generating enough offense on their own can be worth scheming around defensively.
For example, look at Trae Young. He may be the worst defensive guard in the NBA. As a one-man offensive system, he’s well worth the cost.
The Hawks have attempted to mask his defensive limitations by surrounding him with quality stoppers.
Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony Towns is another example. The Minnesota Timberwolves acquired elite rim protector Rudy Gobert this summer to account for his lack of defensive ability.
Could these two offensive superstars switch teams this season?
