It’s tempting to group NBA teams into a dichotomy. They’re either contending or they’re rebuilding.
In reality, it’s not quite that simple. Some teams are between those two extremes. It’s hard to pin down what these organizations are doing necessarily.
For example, look at the Toronto Raptors. This team rosters an odd mixture of veterans and young players.
At 15-18, they find themselves in the middle of the NBA’s standings.
By contrast, the Orlando Magic are 13-21. This team is rebuilding. At the same time, they have been playing better basketball of late.
Could there be a deal that suits both of these sides?
