In some ways, this is nothing more than an insurance policy for Boston. 

When Williams III is out, this team’s defense isn’t as dominant. Granted, Al Horford is a great defender – but he’s only one man. The Celtics’ ability to keep a strong defensive big on the floor is part of their formula. 

With Bamba, they’d be able to do that. Granted, he can’t survive in space, but the broader point stands – he’s still a defensive presence. 

Meanwhile, his ability to space the floor should allow him to co-exist with Williams III – as Williams III’s ability to switch can make up for Bamba’s slow feet.
