Of course, Russell Westbrook makes for an interesting talking point in the evolution of the point guard in his own right. 

Westbrook isn’t a traditional point guard. At the same time, he does rack up assists. Still, that feels like a product of usage – Westbrook creates so much rim pressure that, for a long time, it’s made sense to give him the ball and let him cook. 

As he ages, that strategy loses its effectiveness. Westbrook’s decision-making has always been questionable. He’s been making a more positive contribution of late, but it’s hard to call him a floor general. 

That’s where Hayes comes in. He may not be a scorer, but he is a smart player who can stabilize an offense.
