With that said, Hayes’ career arc has been instructive in more ways than one. 

This is the 7th overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft we’re talking about. Some analysts had Hayes pegged for superstardom. With that said, it hasn’t worked out that way so far. 

Perhaps those analysts were slow to update their thinking. Hayes is a sharp passer and solid defender, but his scoring tools are limited. He doesn’t create rim pressure, and he doesn’t space the floor. 

In times past, that wouldn’t have mattered. Hayes is a point guard – he doesn’t have to do those things.
