If you’re low on draft capital, tanking is pointless. Enduring a losing season just to forfeit a pick to someone else stings badly. It’s an outcome most teams will try to avoid.
For example, look at the 76ers. They don’t own their upcoming draft pick. In fact, they are generally extremely low on draft capital. Sure, they could flip Embiid for a bunch of picks – but they wouldn’t control them or their own, either.
The Bulls are in a slightly different position. They owe their upcoming pick to the Orlando Magic – with top 4 protection.
