Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
For the Mavericks, this is a buy-low opportunity. If Bamba does make good on his potential, this will look like the steal of the century.
Moreover, the Mavs clearly understand the value of a big man who spaces the floor. After all, this team acquired Christian Wood over the summer to do that exact job. Unfortunately, it hasn’t necessarily worked out for them.
Perhaps that’s because Wood lacks the rim protection component a modern big man needs. As gifted as he is offensively, he’s a defensive liability. It seems that he’s lost Head Coach Jason Kidd’s trust for that exact reason.
Bamba may not be a perfect defender, but he isn’t a liability. He may also benefit from playing in a winning environment.

If not, the cost the Mavericks are paying to acquire him is minimal anyway.
