Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
The Nets do this deal out of desperation. There’s no other way to put it.
This team feels like it’s on a fast track to nowhere. It just does. Durant is publicly calling out teammates, Irving was suspended, and Ben Simmons seems to finally be turning things around a bit. Something has to give.
The basketball fit is not the cleanest here. At the same time, Russell is a great playmaker with a gift for finding his teammates. For that matter, so is Ben Simmons. There may be some logic in surrounding Kevin Durant with gifted passers.
If it doesn’t work – so what? It already isn’t working. Russell is on an expiring contract, and so is Irving. This is a last-ditch effort to right the ship before they have to watch it sink.

The Nets, at this point, aren’t getting better value for Irving anyway.
If you want to blame it on his character, we won’t hold that against you.
