Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
If Cam Johnson was healthy, this deal would clearly make the Suns better right now.
After all, Crowder is fairly redundant with Johnson and Mikal Bridges starting for Phoenix. Even Torrey Craig’s presence is relevant – he’s willing to take the reserve role that Crowder is rejecting. Meanwhile, this team could badly use some backcourt depth.
So what? Johnson will be back. When he returns, the Suns will be glad they made this deal. After all, Gordon could be the perfect reserve guard for this roster.
In fact, that’s a role he’s used to as a former Sixth Man of the Year. Gordon spent the best years of his career backing up current Suns guard Chris Paul and James Harden on contending Rockets clubs.

His ability to space the floor and get to the rim attacking downhill should provide similar value to the Suns. Of course, as we just pointed out, the Rockets have held onto Gordon for a long time.
Should this deal entice them to part with him?
