We already told you why the Mavericks do the deal. They’re looking for a co-star for Doncic. Is Simmons the right co-star? 

Some would argue that he’s not. To be sure, Simmons’ complete unwillingness to shoot threes is a problem. At the same time, the Mavericks may be designed to minimize it. 

After all, Christian Wood is one of the best floor-spacing big men in the NBA. Following this deal, the Mavericks would likely promote him to the starting lineup.

Yes, Wood’s defensive limitations have kept him on the bench, but they’ll be offset by adding one of the best defenders in the NBA in Simmons.

More broadly, the Mavs badly need a secondary playmaker. Simmons qualifies. For all of his flaws, he remains one of the best passers in the NBA as well.
