Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
Primarily, the Spurs do this deal to bottom out. They’re trying to downgrade their roster before they win too many games to tank.
None of the players they’re receiving here have been significant contributors for the Lakers this year. If you’ve been following the Lakers, that should say enough. Anyone who can’t crack that rotation in a major way shouldn’t be a player who negates your lottery odds.
At the same time, Troy Brown Jr. is an interesting young player. He’s got the athletic tools to round into a decent 3-and-D wing in time. Realistically, the 23-year-old could benefit from the tutelage of all-time great Head Coach Gregg Popovich.
Finally, the Spurs should be happy to part with Doug McDermott’s contract as well. Yes, it expires after this season, but the Spurs may want flexibility heading into 2023-24.

If they draft Victor Wembanyama or even Scoot Henderson, they may want to seek out the best players they can to expedite their rebuilding process.
For the time being, that may mean absorbing some lesser players. Are the Lakers getting enough back for all of them in McDermott?
