Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
In some ways, the argument that the Knicks ought to improve to make themselves a more appealing free-agent destination is flawed. After all, free agency may be dying in the NBA.
These days, stars typically prefer to lock their own long-term deals as soon as possible. That owes to the player empowerment movement.
Players know that they can force their way off of a team if they want, so they prefer to sign extensions, secure their pay, and then do so if they grow tired of their team.
With that said, they can’t simply force their way onto any team. Often, when a player demands a trade, they present a list of teams they’d prefer to be traded to. That’s what this deal is all about for the Knicks: getting their name on those lists.

Adding Crowder could be a good way to accomplish that goal. After all, he’s one of the best 3-and-D wings in the NBA. He should make the Knicks better in 2022-23, and as a star-hungry organization, that should be all that matters to them.
