Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
If Green was strictly here to improve the Hornets’ culture, they wouldn’t trade for him. They can acquire lower-cost targets to do that deal.
Luckily, that’s not his only benefit here. In fact, Green is one of the best defensive players of his generation. Meanwhile, culture wasn’t the only problem the Hornets had in 2022-23 – they were one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA.
With that in mind, who better to acquire than Green? Meanwhile, he can step directly into P.J. Washington’s role.
In all likelihood, Green would start at the 4 while manning small-ball lines at the 5. He won’t space the floor as well as Washington, but, he’ll be significantly better as a defender.

If any Hornets fans oppose this deal, it’s probably because they’d prefer to see the team tank. They don’t want the Hornets to improve in 2022-23. Fair enough, but on the other hand, an angry LaMelo Ball could only make their cultural problems worse.
