Why The Houston Rockets Do The Deal
Firstly, the Rockets probably wouldn’t do this deal if Martin hadn’t requested a trade. In all likelihood, the young wing is worth more to them now than he’s likely to receive on the open market.
Unfortunately, he has requested a trade. With that in mind, there’s an automatic benefit in moving him. A young team like the Rockets does not need conflict in their locker room.
Meanwhile, Walker won’t come to this team with the same expectation that Martin has. Still, he’s an athletic combo forward with a semblance of a jump shot – he’ll have an opportunity to earn a role here.
Plus, the Rockets get a pair of second-round picks here as well. Martin is unlikely to command an unprotected first-rounder on the open market, but this should do as a consolation prize.
