Why The Cleveland Cavaliers Do The Deal
In acquiring Mitchell, the Cavaliers joined the ranks of the NBA’s contenders. They’ve officially got enough talent to have a feasible shot at winning at all.
In particular, the Cavs have one of the best backcourts in the league. By pairing Mitchell with Darius Garland, this team will have no trouble producing offence out of either guard spot.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers have one of the best big man tandems in the NBA in Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. On the other hand, this team’s wing rotation is relatively weak.
Isaac Okoro is a good defender, but his shooting is woefully inconsistent. Cedi Osman is solid in both areas, but he isn’t spectacular in either.

By contrast, De’Andre Hunter would instantly become the best 3-and-D wing on this roster. The starting spot would be his from day one. There’s no complicated logic in this deal for the Cavaliers: they’re simply filling a position of need.
