Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
If the Suns are lucky, Martin will be a replacement for Crowder – only, one who’s willing to come off the bench behind Cameron Johnson.
Of course, Martin is already griping about playing time. Here, the Suns are gambling that he’ll be more open to a reserve role on a winning team. With that said, this is a two-way relationship: the Suns have to be happy with the arrangement as well.
To make them happy, Martin Jr. will have to make strides. As of now, he’s a player who can use his athleticism to make defensive players, but he can also be undisciplined in man-to-man coverage. By contrast, Crowder is one of the better point-of-attack defensive wings in the NBA.
Still, the Suns don’t need Martin to be Crowder – they only need him to make strides in that direction. He can do that. Meanwhile, Holiday would also likely usurp Cam Payne on the depth chart.

Are the Rockets receiving enough back for him to run the risk of watching him do so?
