Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
More than anything, the Suns are hedging their bets here. They’re moving Bridges while he’s still got peak value. The return package is something between a win-now move and a rebuilding one.
Brooks would slide right into Bridges’ role as the starting small forward. In fact, he’ll play the position quite similarly – just not nearly as well. Brooks is a good defender, but Bridges is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. Moreover, he’s a more consistent floor spacer as well.
On the other hand, the Suns could use guard depth. Tyus Jones provides it – he’s one of the best backup point guards in the NBA. At 26, the Suns could groom him to be Paul’s long-term replacement as well.
By flipping one great player for two good ones, the Suns improve their depth. There’s a chance this deal makes them better in 2022-23.
