Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal 

For the Suns, there’s always been an imbalance in the ages of their winning core. This deal fixes it. 

After all, Deandre Ayton is 24, Devin Booker is 25, and Mikal Bridges is 26. By contrast, Chris Paul is 37. When the Suns acquired Paul, it was because they felt their younger core was ready to win. They were right. On the other hand, the downside of landing Paul was that it shortened their window of contention. 

This deal pries it up a little further. At 24, Fultz is on the same timeline as the best players on this team. He can be their point guard of the future. 

Granted, his injury concerns cloud that future. At the same time, that’s why the Suns also receive a pick swap here. Don’t look for them to make this move tomorrow, but if they get off to a slow start, consider something like this a possibility.
