Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
Of course, bottoming out doesn’t feel consistent with the Knicks’ future plans.
After all, this team just pursued Donovan Mitchell via trade. The Knicks have an outstanding collection of draft capital, but many assume they won’t be using it in the draft. Instead, they appear likely to trade it for a star.
With that said – bottoming out in 2022-23 doesn’t have to jeopardize that plan. Imagine the Knicks drafting one of Wembenyama or Henderson, and then trading their still-impressive draft collection for, say, Bradley Beal. Suddenly, this team is thinking about an NBA title in the next few years.
That’s the vision here. The Knicks are not currently built to be particularly competitive. A 40-win season in 2022-23 would defy even optimistic expectations. Why not bottom all the way out while they have the opportunity?
