Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal

In theory, this is a perfect deal for the Raptors. In theory.

After all, they’re landing a new starting big man in Onkongwu, and replacing Anunoby with Hunter. The former point holds true: Onkongwu would be a perfect acquisition for this club. Whether Hunter is a viable replacement for Anunoby is another matter.

In theory, both are 3-and-D wings that offer secondary playmaking and shot creation. In practice, Hunter has been far less impactful on defense than Anunoby and hasn’t flashed the same creation chops either.

Partly, this deal has the Raptors banking on their developmental track record. If they can get Hunter to even approach Anunoby’s level, this will be a good trade for them.
