Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
Giving up on their recent run of success won’t be easy for the Suns. At the same time, it might be best for them to cut their losses.
After all, there’s always been some incongruence here. When the Suns landed Chris Paul, they did so to help their young core take a step forward.
It worked: the Suns made the NBA Finals in his first year with the team and won 64 games last season. On the other hand, there are reasons to wonder whether they can extend this run.
Chris Paul’s age is the main one. That’s the source of the aforementioned incongruence. Suppose Paul retires after 2022-23: where does that leave the Suns? Does an already disgruntled Deandre Ayton demand a trade? Does a Devin Booker trade demand shortly follow?

This deal helps the Suns avoid catastrophe. Of course, they’re relying on one of two things to happen here: either Ball gets his body right, or White develops into the player scouts hoped for during his college career.
Neither of those outcomes is certain. On the other hand, Paul continuing to age is as certain as anything. If the Suns want to attempt to extend their run, getting younger at point guard would be the way to do it.
