Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
Of course, there’s a reason Crowder is unhappy. Apparently, the Suns informed him that they’d be starting Cam Johnson in his place in 2022-23, and he’s not pleased with that fact.
That points to some good reasons for the Suns to trade Crowder even if he didn’t want out. The Suns have one of the deepest collections of 3-and-D wings in the NBA. Realistically, they could spare one – especially to shore up their guard depth.
As it stands, they’re weak in that area behind Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Gordon would be an instant upgrade over current lead reserve Cam Payne. He’s an elite floor spacer who can hold his own on defense and create shots for himself when necessary.
There are two added bonuses to this deal for the Suns. Firstly, Gordon played alongside Paul back in the Rockets’ aforementioned glory days. That pre-existing chemistry could prove valuable.

Secondly, this deal allows the Suns to get off of Shamet’s regrettable, long-term deal.
Are the Rockets getting enough back to make absorbing it worth their while?
