Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal
NBA trades don’t exist in a vacuum. Often, front offices negotiate deals in relation to other deals that happened recently. In that respect, the league is a marketplace like any other.
Luckily for us, there’s an obvious recent precedent for this deal. The Mavericks and Wizards needn’t look further than the return the Utah Jazz got in exchange for Donovan Mitchell.
In total, the Jazz received three first-round picks and two pick swaps along with Collin Sexton and Lauri Markkanen in exchange for their star guard. With that said, it’s not a perfect comparison – Mitchell is four years younger than Beal. For that reason, the Wizards get the same draft capital here, without the same quality young players.
This deal can’t happen in the offseason. Since the Wizards extended Beal this summer, they can’t move him until after January 15th. Realistically, that’s perfect. The Wizards might as well see what they have with this current roster.

On the other hand, if they’re not happy with their progress by midseason, trading Beal for this kind of draft capital could b a wise decision. He’d have to waive his no-trade clause as well, but again, if the team is sunk, then he may not oppose the move.
Is it a smart trade for the Mavericks?
