Why The Indiana Pacers Do The Deal
Recent rumors have suggested that Turner isn’t actually going anywhere. If those rumors are true, he’ll surely set an NBA record for most trade rumors that weren’t followed by a trade in NBA history.
It is difficult to imagine that there’s no tension between Turner and the Pacers organization. After all, this club offered Deandre Ayton a max contract extension that his Phoenix Suns ultimately ended up matching. When your employer tries to replace you in the public eye, it normally doesn’t sit well.
Of course, interpersonal conflict isn’t the only reason the Pacers ought to trade Turner. Realistically, this team isn’t contending in 2022-23 whether they make this deal or not. Whether they like it or not, it’s time for the Pacers to rebuild.
From that perspective, this is a great deal for Indiana. They’re receiving a first-round pick and a swap for Turner and Hield.

Granted, they’re taking on two big, long-term contracts in the process. That’s fine. The Pacers should be making moves with a longer view in mind – by the time they’re ready to compete, these deals will probably be off the books.
By that time, they may be ready to make a bigger investment.
