Why The Sacramento Kings Do The Deal
For the Kings, this is about roster balance.
This organization acquired Domantas Sabonis at last year’s trade deadline. Realistically, he’s best maximized as a center. Moreover, his fit alongside Holmes is entirely unpalatable: if he’s going to play alongside another big, they need to at least space the floor.
Holmes does not do that. For that reason, he’s likely to simply function as Sabonis’ backup in 2022-23. That’s fine, but at the same time, it feels like a poor use of the salary cap space Holmes eats.
By contrast, Jordan Clarkson would be more useful for the Kings in 2022-23. The guard rotation here is already solid, but they could use a lead ball-handler to carry the second unit’s offense.
