Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
Firstly, the Wolves don’t do this deal if all goes according to plan. Any situation where they feel compelled to move Towns is a nightmare scenario for them.
Unfortunately, in the NBA, sometimes worst fears become reality. The Towns/Gobert partnership could go wonderfully. On the other hand, there are reasons to wonder whether it will work out.
The Wolves brought Gobert on board to compensate for Towns’ lackluster rim protection. Fair enough – but are we sure he’ll do much better on the perimeter? With their new twin towers look, the Wolves might be setting themselves up to get beat by quicker, more wingish fours.
Moreover, they don’t profile as a good transition pairing.

In the event that it’s not working out, this is a good return for Towns. Collins and Hunter are both better compliments for Gobert. Suddenly, the Wolves would have a deep, talented roster built entirely around Anthony Edwards.
This is not the plan for the Timberwolves, but sometimes, plans change. Is this a good plan for Atlanta?
