Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
While this deal has the other two teams involved drastically changing their plans, that’s not the case for the Knicks: This is exactly what they’ve had in mind for a while.
In fact, it’s common knowledge that the Knicks wanted to be the team to land Donovan Mitchell. They’ve been itching to cash in their surplus of draft capital for a star for some time. This deal has them doing exactly that.
Furthermore, the Knicks are one of the only teams that could pull this off. The NBA’s Stephen rule disallows teams from having consecutive drafts without first-round picks.
The Knicks are so flush with draft capital that they can deal picks two years in a row, and still have another team’s selection to work around the rule with.
