Toronto Raptors Receive: F Gordon Hayward, C Mason Plumlee, F/C Kai Jones, 2023 First-Round Pick (DEN via CHA), 2025 First-Round Pick (CHA), 2027 First-Round Pick (CHA)
Charlotte Hornets Receive: F/C Pascal Siakam
Having said all of that – the Toronto Raptors are in something of a weird place too.
It leans closer to being a good one than Charlotte’s situation. The Raptors made the playoffs in 2021-22. Meanwhile, they also rostered the NBA’s Rookie of the Year in Scottie Barnes. Any time a team is competitive with a blue chip prospect on their roster, they’re in a decent position.
At the same time, there are valid questions to ask about Siakam’s long-term fit alongside Barnes. They’re both two-way playmaking wings with inconsistent jump shots. Nobody’s saying they can’t co-exist. We’ve seen worse fits on an NBA floor together. With that said, the future isn’t clear here.
That’s not strictly due to basketball fit. At 28, Siakam is far off of the 21-year-old Barnes’ timeline. By the time Barnes is entering his prime, Siakam is likely to be exiting his.

None of these are irreconcilable problems. The Raptors could stay the course and easily justify that decision. On the other hand, if they do decide to move on from Siakam, is this the right deal for them?
