Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal

This deal is designed to improve the Raptors’ future without destroying their present. 

That notion is best captured by the big men they’re receiving here. Mason Plumlee could be the Raptors’ starting center in 2022-23. Meanwhile, Kai Jones could be their starting center in 2024-25 – and beyond. His upside is enticing as a hyper-athletic defensive big. 

Meanwhile, Hayward will replace some of Siakam’s production in 2022-23. Of course, he’s not the same caliber of player, either. That’s why the Raptors are getting so many picks here. 

All things considered, that’s the main draw for Toronto here. You could frame this as Kai Jones and three first-round picks for Siakam, and it’s a fair value trade.
