Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
Of course, this isn’t a deal the Heat are necessarily likely to make either. On the other hand, it’s a little easier to envision on their end.
Herro is in a contract year. If Miami’s front office is as undecided about Herro’s future as the general NBA world is, that’s a concern. Players his age normally get paid on the basis of potential – how will the Heat pay him if they’re not sure what his potential is?
If they made this deal, we can assume they landed on “a long-term sixth man”. That’s not a knock on Herro – plenty of hyper-talented players have filled that role. On the other hand, you wouldn’t want to overpay your sixth man, either.
If that’s the Heat’s projection for Herro, this is a good return. Moreover, the Heat could use a little draft capital. They were linked to plenty of big names this summer, only to come up short.

Realistically, they didn’t have the trade assets to land them. This deal shores up their base a little bit. They just have to throw the rule book out to make it happen.
