Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal
Firstly, the Wizards can’t do this deal until January 15th, due to Beal’s aforementioned extension.
Perhaps that’s preferable. For what it’s worth, we haven’t seen Beal alongside the recently acquired Kristaps Porzingis yet. If the Wizards appear to be greater than the sum of their parts, perhaps trading Beal won’t be desirable.
On the other hand, if they don’t, the Wizards should read the writing on the wall. Vultures have been circling Beal’s tenure in Washington for years. It could finally be time to call it quits.
If so, this is a good deal for the Wizards. The Celtics aren’t exactly loaded with draft capital, so they can’t offer them the type of package that teams typically do for a star these days.

On the other hand, Robert Williams III should be worth a pair of first-rounders on his own. Acquiring a 24-year-old defensive anchor would be a smart move for a suddenly rebuilding Wizards club.
Is trading him the right call for the Celtics?
