Why The Sacramento Kings Do The Deal
On the subject of the NBA’s evolution, we’re in the pace and space era. Unfortunately, the Kings, as currently constructed, aren’t built to thrive on either count.
In fact, the pairing between Sabonis and franchise point guard De’Aaron Fox stands to look clunky on both scores. Realistically, the two couldn’t be further apart in terms of their preferred pace of play. Fox is one of the fastest point guards in the NBA, whereas Sabonis is slow-footed and operates best in the half-court.
Still, it’s the spacing between the two that holds more potential to be problematic. Neither is a plus shooter. They are, with that said, both strong playmakers – and like other strong playmakers, would be optimized when surrounded by shooting.
This deal has the Kings choosing Fox, and surrounding him with shooters. The players they’re bringing in are a much better fit for him.
