Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves Make A Move
Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: G Mike Conley, F Bojan Bogdanovic
Utah Jazz Receive: F Davis Bertans, G/F Tim Hardaway Jr., G Jordan McLaughlin, 2025 First-Round Pick (DAL), 2028 First-Round Pick (Swap – MIN)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: G D’Angelo Russell, F/C Nathan Knight
You may be asking yourself: wait, who’s the fringe contender here? The Minnesota Timberwolves, or the Dallas Mavericks? We’ve got your answer: Can’t it be both?
Of course, there’s an obvious irony in this deal. The Timberwolves already did business with the Jazz this summer, acquiring star big man Rudy Gobert at the cost of four unprotected first-round picks. With that said, that was before the Jazz traded Mitchell.
The Wolves are already in for a penny, so they might as well go in for a pound. There’s no sense in clinging to full control over their 2028 first-round pick when they’re already so light on draft capital.
This trade would be a significant upgrade for them. Conley isn’t quite as dynamic a playmaker as Russell, but he’s a far better floor-spacer. With this Minnesota Timberwolves offense running through Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards, he’s a better fit – and Bogdanovic fits with any contender.

On the other hand, the Mavericks are desperate for a secondary ball-handler behind Luka Doncic. Russell would be a perfect acquisition to alleviate that concern.
All told, this deal ought to push two fringe contenders over the hump.
