In some ways, there’s no more exciting feeling than being on the cusp of a goal. Accomplishment brings relief, while being too far from a goal to consider accomplishing it brings perspective. To be on the verge of accomplishing it is a thrill. The same is true for NBA teams.

The goal is to build a contender. Fans of teams who have already done so are either celebrating a championship or growing weary from the fear that they’ll never get to do so.

Fans of rebuilding teams can rest a little easier – they know they have to wait. Finally, fans of teams who are right on the fringe of contention may struggle to get any shuteye. 

Fans of, for example, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Having acquired Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz this summer, they’re about to enter into the first season of their current rebuilding cycle where they have any shot at taking home the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Now, teams that were previously fringe contenders may look to join them. 

After all, it’s a copycat league. Moreover, the Cavaliers followed a tested and true formula to get here – build through the draft, make smart, smaller trades, and then when you start to look competitive, make a push for contention.
