Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
By contrast, the Heat are in a vastly different position from the Pacers. Specifically, they’re squarely in win-now mode.
This deal helps them win now. On paper, the pairing between Turner and Adebayo isn’t just viable – it’s tantalizing.
Offensively, Turner’s ability to space the floor will compensate for Adebayo’s inability to do so. Neither man’s role will change – Adebayo will continue as an elite playmaking and screen setting big, while Turner will proceed as a spot-up shooter who creates space for Adebayo to make his plays.
It’s on the defensive end where this pair should really shine. For the past several years, Adebayo has arguably been overtaxed as the Heat’s center. He’s their primary rim protector, but he’s also expected to switch and generally function as a free safety.

That will no longer be the case following this deal. With Turner’s elite rim protection, Adebayo can focus on creating havoc as a weak side shot blocker and passing lane disrupter.
All told, they could be the best defensive pairing in the NBA. For a pair of players playing a supposedly dead position, that’s pretty good.
