Why The Memphis Grizzlies Do The Deal
For Memphis, this deal is all about consolidating assets. They just happen to be doing so in a couple of ways.
Firstly, they’re avoiding Brandon Clarke’s next contract. He’s on an expiring deal, and he’s likely to receive a significant raise with his next one. Meanwhile, this Grizzlies roster is stacked with talent, and about to get expensive.
Of course, title contention is a pricey endeavour, and the Grizzlies should be willing to pay. With that said, this deal is about putting them in a position o make their money travel further.
In adding a first-round pick to their collection, the Grizzlies increase their trade assets. This deal puts them in a better position to trade for a star ahead of the 2023-23 season if they so choose. Moreover, it doesn’t hurt to take a flier on Thybulle – if his shot comes around, he could usurp Dillon Brooks in this team’s rotation.

If it doesn’t, this was all about that first-round pick anyway. Should the Sixers, even with top-5 protection, really part with it?
