Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal
This is not a no-brainer for the Bulls. To be sure, they’ll miss Ball. He’s an elite passer and floor spacer, and a great point-of-attack defender as well.
On the other hand, Avdija and Barton combined may do more for them. Realistically, the main reason the Bulls pull the trigger here is for depth: they’re trading one quality player for two.
It just so happens they could use them both. Avdija has developed into an outstanding, versatile defensive player in this league. He’ll be beneficial in covering for starting big man Nikola Vucevic’s shortcomings in that area. He also functions as an insurance policy for the oft-injured Patrick Williams, but if Williams is healthy, they can comfortably co-exist as well.
Finally, Barton gives this team the sixth man they were missing in 2021-22. After landing him, they won’t need to rely on the young, inconsistent Coby White next season.

As with Avdija and Williams, Barton should be able o play alongside White if he does break out next year: after all, he’s a solid floor-spacer in addition to being a strong secondary playmaker.
All told, this deal has the potential to make the Bulls better in 2022-23. Does it do the same for the Wizards?
