Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
For the Knicks, this deal isn’t necessarily about getting better in 2022-23.
Largely, this deal is about getting away from Julius Randle. In 2021-22, it appeared increasingly obvious that frustration was boiling over with both Randle and the organization. If the relationship is permanently damaged, it might be time to move on.
Doing so would be good for their books too. Barton is on an expiring contract, while Kuzma only has an extra year on his. Conversely, Randle is locked up (on bigger money, no less) through to 2026.
As with any discussion involving the Knicks, there’s an elephant in this room, and its name is Donovan Mitchell. With that said, this deal could work for New York either way.

They’re either clearing cap room for Mitchell’s co-star, or they’re clearing cap room for their new star. In either event, they’ll hope to land someone who’s on the league’s A-List.
