Much ink has been spilled discussing whether the Jazz ought to trade Donovan Mitchell. Allow us, if you will, to spill a little more. 

It’s been said that the definition of insanity is to follow the same course of action repeatedly and expect different results. Of course, others will prefer the textbook definition of “the state of being seriously mentally ill”, but we digress: 

If you accept the former definition, keeping Mitchell would be an insane decision for the Jazz to make this summer. 

It feels like this era of Jazz basketball has run its course. During it, the team hasn’t even advanced to the Conference Finals. Sure, Mitchell is only 25 – the Jazz could still retool around him while he’s in his prime. Yet, that feels like a potential course towards unending mediocrity.

The smarter decision is likely to start from scratch, and hope their next franchise player can take them further than Mitchell and Gobert could.
