Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal

To reiterate, the New York Knicks, like the Utah Jazz, only do this trade if Mitchell is traded to a team besides the Knicks.

In that event, expect Utah to seek a first-round pick for Bogdanovic. Again, whether they’ll actually receive one is a matter of debate. Bogey is a good, useful veteran, but he’s also on an expiring contract. Contending teams may hesitate to part with major assets for a rental. 

Of course, if the Knicks don’t trade for Mitchell, they’re hardly a contending team. With that said, they’re not exactly rebuilding either.

Often, it feels like this organization is simply spinning its tires while it waits for a star trade.

If they are, upgrading Reddish for the veteran Bogdanovic could be smart. They hardly seem to be using Reddish anyway, and incremental improvement in 2022-23 could make them a more appealing destination for stars in the short term. 

Even if that star doesn’t end up being Donovan Mitchell.
