Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal

Honestly, this probably won’t really qualify as a reunion with Westbrook. In all likelihood, the Wizards will either buy him out or sit him down until his contract expires in a year. 

For the Wizards, this deal is about bottoming out and starting over. After all, this group has been mired in mediocrity in recent years. Following this deal, they may be able to position themselves to maximize their lottery odds ahead of 2022-23. 

Of course, some will suggest that, if that’s the goal, the Wizards ought to trade Beal. They may have a point – on the other hand, are we sure? 

After all, the Wizards have struggled to rack up sizeable win totals behind Beal since John Wall was traded years ago. Beal is a good player. In fact, he’s one of the most dynamic scoring guards in the NBA. For whatever reason, his abilities haven’t translated into wins for the Wizards.

Perhaps Beal would be best suited to be a second option. If that’s the case, this deal maximizes the Wizards’ odds of landing their future number one in the 2023 Draft – if they’re lucky, it could be Victor Wembenyama.
