Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal
Firstly, the Celtics do the deal because Jaylen Brown feels alienated from the organization. If he doesn’t, they may be better off keeping a group that just advanced to the NBA Finals together.
With that said, there is some logic for the Celtics here as well. The same “new look” argument that worked for the Jazz applies in Bean Town as well. For that matter, Mitchell may bring the exact skillset the Celtics need the most.
After all, they struggled mightily with ball-handling in the 2021-22 NBA Finals. Mitchell provides plenty of it. Moreover, pairing a dominant playmaking wing (Jayson Tatum) with an elite scoring/playmaking guard in Mitchell diversifies the Celtics’ attack.
Finally, even Mitchell’s defensive limitations can be mitigated in Boston. After all, they roster one of the NBA’s best point-of-attack defenders in Marcus Smart.

Realistically, the Celtics won’t do this unless they have to. Continuity following an NBA Finals appearance should trump all of the advantages of making this trade.
With that said, if Brown is truly dissatisfied with the organization, that continuity may not be desirable. In that event, they could surely do worse than making this deal with the Jazz.
